Do you know what E-Waste is? E-Waste is electronics that you never use any more; like old TV's, cell phones, and computers. Instead of letting E-Waste clutter your closets, here’s how to get rid of it, the right way. Most communities have special collection days for E-Waste, usually at a local school or dump site. Some charities also sponsor E-Waste pickups at your home; go online to find out when and where. E-Waste is sorted, and mechanically shredded. Reusable metals are removed and recycled. Your closets and the environment will thank you.

Family heirlooms around your home need special care. Protect breakables by using mild cleaners, a feather duster, and a gentle touch. To wash crystal in your sink, put a towel down first to prevent chips and cracks. Use dish soap, vinegar, and water to make it sparkle. Museum wax keeps the heirlooms securely on shelves. For heavier pieces use Velcro strips to keep them safe. It only takes a few minutes to make sure your family treasures are around for years to come.

Love the look of crystal clear glass tables, inside and outside your home? Here's the best way to clean and protect them. First, remove anything heavy that could crack or break a glass tabletop. Always place objects on your table gently. Never toss anything onto a glass table, because it could easily chip. Use coasters under drinks or food, especially anything very hot or cold. Clean your glass often, to get rid of fingerprints, dust, and smudges. Use window spray, or water and vinegar for a streak free surface.

Supplies
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Rags
  • Coasters

Here’s a weekend project that will help your driveway look like new. Have you ever used a power washer? You can rent one from your home improvement center. Power washers are perfect for concrete driveways and most brick surfaces. Make sure the mortar around the brick is solid and not crumbling. Keep power washers away from unsealed wood decks. Too much water pressure could destroy soft wood fibers and leave the surface fuzzy. Work from top to bottom, so dirty water doesn’t drip down onto your clean section. Here’s an important safety tip: never leave a power washer unattended and stay clear of the nozzle.

Supplies
  • Power Washer from Local Hardware Store
  • Water

When was the last time you gave your window screens a good cleaning? If you have dust or pollen allergies, cleaning the screens will help you breathe easier at home.  Here’s the easy way to do it. You don’t need to take the screens off the windows. Leave them in place, and brush with a soft wide paintbrush, to loosen the trapped dust and pollen. Then, use a handheld Dust Buster or vacuum to finish the job. If your window handle is loose and won’t open easily, I like to use Locktyte Gel to tighten it up. As soon as it dries, you can crank it open.

What kind of kitchen sink do you have? Cast-Iron is the most common. Rinse your sink often especially for foods that can stain, like tomato sauce. Avoid abrasive cleansers, and your sink enamel will last for decades. Stainless Steel sinks clean easily with a paste of baking soda and water. Dry afterwards to prevent water spots. Acrylic sinks need special care. Try two drops of dish liquid on a sponge and never put a hot pot in an acrylic sink, otherwise it’ll melt.

Supplies
  • Baking Soda
  • Dish Soap, Sponges
  • Sink Polish and Cleansers

Leather furniture looks great, but it can be hard to maintain. Try this: Vacuum thoroughly and be careful not to scratch the leather. Mix a few drops of mild-faced soap with a quart of distilled water until suds form. Dip a soft cloth in the water and ring it out. Test a small hidden area first, then work one section at a time. Dip another cloth in clean distilled water and wipe away the soapy residue. Dry the leather completely, then buff.  Now you’re ready for leather conditioning.

Supplies
  • Dust Buster
  • Mild Face Soap and Distilled Water
  • Soft Cloths

When was the last time you cleaned your windows? Try a window cleaning kit with a squeegee and extension pole. A good squeegee will have a replaceable rubber blade. Fill a spray bottle with warm water and two drops of dish soap. Lay down an old towel to catch drips. Then just spray, and squeegee your window from top to bottom. A microfiber cloth cleans a squeegee blade after each downstroke. For a high-tech solution, try Winbot. That’s a window-cleaning robot that wipes and dries with the touch of a button.

Here’s how to keep your laundry room organized and efficient. Label bins, bags or hampers for sorting dirty clothing. Keep a stain chart handy, along with your stain removers. A simple sowing kit with extra buttons is helpful too. Store detergent within easy reach and keep bleach where it won’t spill. Sponges and scrubbers are good for quick cleanups. A laundry rack is great for air-drying. Be sure to have a clean, flat, folding surface so your laundry stays fresh.

Here are three top clutter-busters to help you stay organized.  First, create a designated drop spot for everything you carry when you walk into your house.  It can be as simple as a tray for keys, mail and sunglasses.  Then try an all-in-one charging station for all your electronics.  And you’ll never forget your phone on the way out.  Finally, get an old-school paper sorter for your table.  You can prioritize bills, invitations and flyers in minutes
