The Back Story

When was the last time you gave your window screens a good cleaning? If you have dust or pollen allergies, cleaning the screens will help you breathe easier at home.  Here’s the easy way to do it. You don’t need to take the screens off the windows. Leave them in place, and brush with a soft wide paintbrush, to loosen the trapped dust and pollen. Then, use a handheld Dust Buster or vacuum to finish the job. If your window handle is loose and won’t open easily, I like to use Locktyte Gel to tighten it up. As soon as it dries, you can crank it open.

Before you buy a new doorknob, take off the old one with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the two screws that hold the knob in place; both knobs should come off, along with the plate. A square steal peg that connects the knobs will come out too. Slide the latch out, remove the screws that attach it and take off the striped plate. Now you’re ready to go doorknob shopping. Take your old knob and hardware with you to make sure your new one fits perfectly. This is a do it yourself project I know you can handle.

Supplies
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • Door Knob Kit

Looking for unique backsplash ideas that are easy on the budget? A backsplash is the area behind your sink. Try a beaded board panel for a county kitchen feel. Give it two coats of high gloss paint for quick clean up. A sheet of glass can be painted on the back for a modern backsplash look. Seal well around the edges, so water can’t seep in; or, try stainless steel stick on tiles for an industrial feel that will match your appliances. Remember, your backsplash sets the tone for the entire kitchen, so be creative.

Supplies
  • Paint (Brushes, Pan, and Rollers)
  • Spray Paint
  • Stick On Backsplash Tiles
  • Loctite Gel
  • Glass
  • Beaded Board Panel

Family heirlooms around your home need special care. Protect breakables by using mild cleaners, a feather duster, and a gentle touch. To wash crystal in your sink, put a towel down first to prevent chips and cracks. Use dish soap, vinegar, and water to make it sparkle. Museum wax keeps the heirlooms securely on shelves. For heavier pieces use Velcro strips to keep them safe. It only takes a few minutes to make sure your family treasures are around for years to come.

Supplies
  • Dish Soap Mixed with Water
  • Soft Rags
  • Feather Duster
  • Towels
  • Museum Wax
  • Vinegar
  • Velcro

When was the last time you cleaned your windows? Try a window cleaning kit with a squeegee and extension pole. A good squeegee will have a replaceable rubber blade. Fill a spray bottle with warm water and two drops of dish soap. Lay down an old towel to catch drips. Then just spray, and squeegee your window from top to bottom. A microfiber cloth cleans a squeegee blade after each downstroke. For a high-tech solution, try Winbot. That’s a window-cleaning robot that wipes and dries with the touch of a button.

Here’s how to accident proof your home, room by room. Use non-slip safety strips for area rugs in the living room. Make sure extension cords are tucked away, and curtains are far from heater vents. In the kitchen, keep dishtowels away from burners. Smoke alarms belong in every bedroom. A flashlight should always be within reach. In the bathroom, tubs need a nonskid surface, like decals. Don’t forget to store medicine and cleaning supplies where kids can’t get to them. A little advance planning can make your home a much safer place.

Supplies
  • Non-Slip Safety Strips
  • Non Slip Decals
  • Smoke Alarms

Do you want to save money without leaving the house? Unplug it; TV’s and electronics use power even when they’re turned off. Your family could save one hundred dollars a year, just by using smart power strips. Try lowering the temperature on your water heater by ten degrees; you can save five percent on energy costs. Here’s a great money saver; when the weather gets cool, reverse your ceiling fan. By revolving it clockwise, your fan pulls up cool air and sends down the warmer air that’s settled near the ceiling.

Supplies
  • Power Strip

Want a natural way to fragrance your home? Try organic scented candles or flowers fresh from the garden. Spices simmering on the stove make your whole house smell great. Or stick a few sprigs of fresh mint in a vase. You can grind citrus peel at your disposal for a lively fragrance. Try smearing a couple of drops of vanilla on cool light bulbs. When you turn them on, you’ll enjoy the scent of warm vanilla throughout your home.

  • Flowers
  • Cinnamon Sticks
  • Mint
  • Citrus Peels
  • Vanilla Extract
