It’s easy to take your style outside by transforming your patio or deck into an outdoor dining room. A simple card table and chairs can be used to create a traditional look. Dress your al fresco dining table with lighting and a pop of color. Keep your outdoor room private with a fence or a screen. And don’t forget to add a natural soundtrack to your outdoor space. A water feature creates soothing sounds that will help you and your guest relax.

Supplies
  • Card Table
  • Table Cloth
  • Chairs
  • Candles
  • Fountain

Do you want to light up your walkway or backyard? Try a low voltage lighting set. First, decide where you want your lights to go. For walkways, put a light every eight to ten feet. Then, find the nearest outlet to plug-in your power supply. Connect your cable to your two transformer terminals, and run the cable to your lights. It’s safe to bury low voltage cable. Clap each light to the cable to make the connection and stake your lights in the ground. When all the lights are connected plug-in the transformer. Now, your guests will always find their way to your front door.

Supplies
  • Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting Set
  • Screwdriver

Need a pop of color for your patio? Try an outdoor rug. Just measure the area you want to cover. Decide what shape and size you need. To protect your outdoor floor from marks get a bigger rug to fit under tables and chairs. You could choose a natural fiber rug or pick a synthetic if it’s going to get wet. Keep the flow going from indoors to out with similar colors and styles. If your home is traditional, try neutral colors or florals. For modern décor, go with geometric patterns or stripes.

Supplies
  • Tape Measure
  • Variety of Rug Styles
The Back Story

What does your welcome mat say about you? A door mat that’s graphic and contemporary shows a cutting edge style. A brightly colored one says you’re happy and light-hearted. If it’s funny, like this one, you might be the life of the party. A functional industrial look can mean you’re focused and business-like. A more traditional mat may be for someone who is family oriented and home-loving. What if your doormat simply says “Welcome”? Now, that’s a friendly message that will make everyone feel right at home.

You can add style to your garden by creating concrete planters. You’ll need a bucket of concrete mix, a bucket, a stir stick, two plastic containers for molds, some cooking oil, and a paintbrush. Use the paintbrush to coat the molds with oil. Mix the concrete with water in the bucket. Fill the large mold with concrete up to an inch from the top. Press the small mold into the larger one. Leave enough concrete to form a bottom for the planter. Weigh down the smaller mold with a rock and let it set for 24 hours. Remove the molds, smooth the rough edges, and you’re ready to plant.

The Back Story

How do you water the plants in your garden? Most folks use sprinklers, but I like drip irrigation. Drip systems are more efficient because they save water. They can use up to fifty-percent less than sprinklers by delivering moisture directly to your plants roots. Your soil surface stays dry, so less weeds. Try a drip irrigation starter kit with soaker hoses. You place them around the plants you want to water and you just connect the open end of the soaker to your garden hose and turn it on. Remember to look for a drip irrigation kit you can add on to, so you can expand your system as your garden grows.

The Back Story

Do you love a good barbecue like I do? Here’s how you maintain your propane or gas grill so your food always tastes delicious. Start by disconnecting your gas or propane tank. Do this after you grill so the grates are still slightly warm and easier to clean with a stiff wire brush and grill scraper. Check the burners for clogs and clean off any incrusted food from the lava rock. Then, clean inside your grill with warm soapy water. Check to make sure all the connections are good and let your grill heat up completely to burn off any soapy residue. Then, all you have to do is decide what to make for dinner.

What could be more soothing than the sounds of a backyard water fountain? Here is an inexpensive way to make one. Find an area with a nearby electrical outlet then pick out a resin pot instead of a ceramic one. They’re lightweight and much easier to drill through. You’ll need a small pond pump and a bag of river rocks. Fill your pot with rocks halfway. Put your pump on top. Drill a hole about the water line and push the pump cord through it. Add more rocks and fill with water. Plug in your pump, sit back, and enjoy the relaxing sounds of your one of a kind water fountain

Supplies
  • Resin Pot of your choice
  • River Rocks
  • Water Pump
  • Electric Drill
  • Drill Bit (Exact Size of Pump Tube)
  • Waterproof Lights (Optional)
