Family heirlooms around your home need special care. Protect breakables by using mild cleaners, a feather duster, and a gentle touch. To wash crystal in your sink, put a towel down first to prevent chips and cracks. Use dish soap, vinegar, and water to make it sparkle. Museum wax keeps the heirlooms securely on shelves. For heavier pieces use Velcro strips to keep them safe. It only takes a few minutes to make sure your family treasures are around for years to come.

Supplies
  • Dish Soap Mixed with Water

Here’s how to accident proof your home, room by room. Use non-slip safety strips for area rugs in the living room. Make sure extension cords are tucked away, and curtains are far from heater vents. In the kitchen, keep dishtowels away from burners. Smoke alarms belong in every bedroom. A flashlight should always be within reach. In the bathroom, tubs need a nonskid surface, like decals. Don’t forget to store medicine and cleaning supplies where kids can’t get to them. A little advance planning can make your home a much safer place.

The Back Story

Everybody knows a household emergency kit is important. Here’s what you need to know to put one together. Start with a plastic storage bin. Put it in a place in your home with easy access. You should have an LED flashlight, extra batteries, fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit. Keep heavy pliers in case you need to turn off gas and water. For added protection, add dust masks, gloves, and several gallons of drinking water for each person at home. If you have a landline phone, keep a handset you can plug right into the phone jack just in case you can’t use your cell phone.

Winter weather will be here before you know it. Time to get a new filter for your furnace and call the gas company for a preseason inspection. Weather-strip your windows to prevent air leaks. Wrap exposed pipes in rubber sleeves and use an insulation blanket on your water heater, especially if it’s an older model. Get your chimney checked for cracks and leaks. Make sure your roof is in good shape for harsh weather too. While you’re at it, clean out all your rain gutters. Now your house is ready for winter.

The Back Story

A step stool makes a great addition to your kitchen. Here’s how to choose the right one. First, decide where you’ll store it. For under counter storage, get the non-folding kind. If space is an issue, try a folding model. For lightweight use, a plastic one can work. For heavy-duty use, try aluminum or steel. Remember, if your stool is rated for two hundred pounds, that means your weight plus whatever you’re lifting. Play it safe, get the sturdiest step stool available.
