The Back Story

Do you need a new hose for your yard? They can range from 10 to 100 feet long. A hose that’s a ½ an inch thick delivers 9 gallons of water a minute. A thicker hose delivers more. Rubber hoses are heaviest, but stand up best to extreme weather. You should always keep your garden hose rolled up. You can use a wall hanger like this or keep it coiled in a hose pot. To help your hose last longer, store it out of direct sunlight. Remember to drain your hose completely before freezing temperatures set it.

A step stool makes a great addition to your kitchen. Here’s how to choose the right one. First, decide where you’ll store it. For under counter storage, get the non-folding kind. If space is an issue, try a folding model. For lightweight use, a plastic one can work. For heavy-duty use, try aluminum or steel. Remember, if your stool is rated for two hundred pounds, that means your weight plus whatever you’re lifting. Play it safe, get the sturdiest step stool available.

Supplies
  • Variety of Step Stools

Most home improvement centers have a great resource for do-it-yourselfers: the tool rental department. You can rent tools for half a day, at a fraction of the cost to buy. Get everything you need to shampoo your carpets. For big jobs, there are routers, staple guns, and belt sanders. Redecorating? Try a wallpaper steamer or a cordless paint sprayer. For your yard, you can rent everything from ladders to lawn mowers. Tool rental is a great way to try before you buy.

Is it time for a garden tool tune up? Start with a careful cleaning. This is especially true for pruning shears. Use a nailbrush, then a drop or two of oil for lubrication. You can keep garden tools in a bucket of sand with a bit of linseed oil. The oil also works to wipe down wooden handles. Store garden tools in a covered area and don’t let them sit out overnight. Look for tools with bright handles or paint them yourself so you can easily see where you left them in the garden.

Supplies
  • Nail Bristle Brush
  • Lubrication Oil
  • Boiled Linseed Oil
  • Bright Colored Garden Tools
  • Bucket with Sand
Instructions

If you love to garden here’s how to keep you’re favorite gardening tools together all year long. First, get a sturdy plastic pale like the kind your hardware store carries. Fill it with a canvas insert with pockets that will hold small tools and supplies that often get misplaced. Then add a trowel for planting flowers. And a cultivator, that’s great for weeding. And a pruner for a dead heading and shaping your plants. You probably want a pair of garden gloves to protect your hands, a comfortable kneepad, and a bandana to wipe your tools with. Don’t forget a wide-brim hat and some good sunscreen so you don’t get burned.

Supplies
  • Plastic Pale
  • Bucket Canvas Insert
  • Trowel
  • Cultivator
  • Gloves
  • Pruner
  • Knee Pad

Every household needs a basic toolkit. Having the right tools at your fingertips makes quick home repairs much easier. Begin with a sturdy toolbox that will fit in a kitchen or back porch cabinet. Collect a good quality medium weight hammer, and a flat head and Philips head screwdriver. Add a utility knife, two pairs of pliers, and a twenty-foot tape measure. It helps to have a staple gun on hand, and I suggest nails and a variety of screws and a pair of wire cutters. Those are the basics for your toolbox.

Supplies
  • Tool Box

  • Flat Head and Phillips Screwdriver
  • Utility Knife
  • Pliers
  • 20 ft. Tape Measure

The Back Story

Want to chose a ladder to help you work around the house? First, figure out the height you’ll need. If you’re average height and you want to reach ten feet, go for at least a six-foot stepladder. Load capacity is also important. Include your weight plus the materials you will be carrying. A two hundred or more capacity is good for painting, cleaning, and light home repair. A multi-use ladder works as a stepladder or an extension ladder. Aluminum ladders are strong and lightweight, but if you’re working near anything electrical use a fiberglass ladder. They’re strong and won’t conduct electricity.
